I hate PDF files, I don't get the point of them, why do companies like Intel and Nvidia use PDF files for their online product manuals or release notes?
Why do we even need PDF files? There are a lot of better alternatives that can do a better job than PDF. What can PDF do that HTML can't for example? HTML display abilities are as good as PDF, it is also faster, and you already have a browser to read HTML.
For example, I want to read the manual for my motherboard, I go to Intel's website and into my product page and I have to download the PDF file before I can read about what a certain setting does in the BIOS.
The only company I came across that doesn't force you to open PDF files is Dell, in their support pages you can read ANY manual for ANY of their products in HTML and this saves me a lot of time in my job when I work with Dell laptops, servers and desktops, and no, I don't work for Dell, I just work at a place that uses Dell.
The worst thing about PDF files is the Acrobat Reader, one of the worst applications of all time, it's bloated, takes too long to load and it installs too many things on your computer, it has an autoupdate program that runs everytime you run Windows. It's too big, a program that opens text and pictures shouldn't take the disk size and memory space this program does, also it's updates sizes are too big as well and are too often.
A perfect example the Adobe Acrobat Reader is too bloated and badly written is Foxit Reader. Foxit Reader size is less than 2MB and it can open any pdf file that Adobe Acrobat opens.
I refuse to install Acrobat Reader on my home PC, I use Google Docs to open PDF files I need to read.
Bottom line is, please ditch this format and let it die.
