The problem with games dedicated servers

Multiplayer games, usually first person shooters have dedicated servers where players connect to and play with other players.

The problem with many dedicated servers is that they allow themselves to change how the game was originally ment to be played, I will give examples.

1. Counter-Strike Source: A rule that disallow a use of a sniper weapon,

Many servers think the AWP is overpowered and don't allow players to use it even though Counter-Strike is ment to allow all players to use this weapon if they choose.

2. Battlefield 2: A rule that says you must wait in line for a vehicle.

Some servers have this stupid rule that you must wait in line for a vehicle, usually Jets and Attack Helicopters in 64 player servers have many people wanting to use the Jet, so this rule is trying to make it fair for all, but many times it is abused by admin who just kick people when they take his jet after he died.

3. Battlefield 2: No baserape

In BF2 there are bases which have flags that cannot be captured, also called "uncaps", these bases only limitation is that they can't be captured, the game originally allow attacking these bases but there are servers that will ban you for doing so, I rathar play the game the way it was ment to be by the developer who made it.

4. Kick high ping

Many servers have strict anti lag rule that kick players with high pings, I usually support this but sometimes they limit the ping so low that even when you have a reasonable ping you get kicked, this is usually happen to me with Counter-Strike Source when I try to play with a friend from far away, we usually go over 5 servers until we find one that allows reasonable ping.

5. Modded servers

In Counter-Strike and Call of Duty there are many servers that are running custom mods that have annoying sounds or other gameplay changes, I don't like these servers, if you want to make a mod to the game do it on a seperate server list in a new custom mod, don't force it on me when I try to play an original game.

There are many more examples, some rules are good which means the developers didn't do a good job of fixing a gameplay imbalance.

A server should not take liberty at preventing players from playing the game as it was originally ment, no admin knows better than the original game developer, when a game has a problem it should not be the admin who fix the game to make it more fun, the developers should address issues and prevent them from happening by the game itself.

If a game has an issue that is unfair it should be fixed from the root, by the game mechanic itself, not by some admin enforcing a rule that disallow a gameplay feature which is originally allowed by the game.
