Battlefield 3 release date is the end of this year, I loved Battlefield 2 I played it since it was released and have played it many hours. I decided to write a post that reflects on what killed Battlefield 2 for me personally.
Over the years Battlefield 2 saw patches that changed it's gameplay dramatically from where it started when it was released in 2005.
Differences between Battlefield 2 version 1.0 and 1.50
- Jet dogfights, when BF2 was released jets dogfights were a lot harder than how they are in version 1.5, to take down another jet you would have to get very close to the enemy jet to have a successful missile hit, this was a lot more fun than how it is now that jets die within 2 minutes after take off, when jets became easy to kill it was no longer much fun to use them.
- Blackhawk, the Blackhawk used to be a lot more powerful, it wasn't easy to take it down and it's Miniguns were powerful as they are in real life, the Blackhawk used to wreack havoc in the map Mashtuur City and it was a lot of fun.
- Grenade Launcher, the grenade launcher used to be more powerful on BF2 release, now it is very weak and the assault class is useless.
- Squad Joining, in version 1.0 you used to be able to join squads even when you are dead, this was a lot more useful to join a squad leader that is in an important location far away, then in one of the patches they made it so you can only join squads when you are alive. Note: In Bad Company 2 they let you join squads while your dead but they never reversed this change in BF2.
- Passengers caputring flags, in version 1.0 a vehicle driver and the passengers could capture flags while inside the vehicle, a later patch changed it so only the driver can capture the flag, the passengers have to exit the vehicle if they want to help capture the flag and get points for it.
- Medic revives, version 1.0 the medic had unlimited revives, then in later patch it was limited, bad idea.
- Repair, in version 1.0 the repair was quicker when you were repairing helicopters like the Blackhawk, the change in one of the patches to make it slower was a bad idea.
You may agree or disagree about this, but I believe all these changes resulted in Battlefield 2 being a much less fun game to play.
Battlefield 3 should feature the original Battlefield 2 gameplay.
